Here's a quick help page that I wrote up to... give people ideas. Read it if you want, scroll down for the application if not.

Name - you'd assume it would be simple, and it can be, but it can also be poorly done.

Basics - don't give someone a name that is also a noun (that is not normally used as a name of course). A common one I see is Rumor or Raven. This is Mary Sue-ish. For both first and last names, don't give an incredibly exotic name to someone not exotic or with no family history from India or whatever.
Spelling - avoid changing the name's spelling to make it look more exotic. Ie. Caytlynn for Caitlin or Harryit for Harriet.
Nicknames - try to stick to nicknames off the character's real name

Appearance - the most mary sue section of all, and that will not be accepted here on CR, so I have a few tips for you to avoid the mary sue-ness that often comes with this section

Height and Weight - make sure they match up, girls tend to be overly skinny. We've given you a site to look at to know what the ratios for both men and women should be.
Hair - don't use words like "long flowing locks" or whatever else. Say the color, texture, length etc. but don't go overboard with trying to say how pretty it is. Using words like this is very mary sue
Eyes - avoid any type of metaphor. Don't say someone could fall into them or that they look like waterfalls. Color, shape, eye lashes, eye brows. If you feel their eyes are alluring say it like "many people seem to be pulled towards his/her eyes" or whatever. Seem means it may or may not be true, it's just how the character takes it.
lips and teeth - few people's teeth are perfectly straight, few people have perfect lips. Good place to add in flaws because almost everyone has them here
basic body - obviously you have to go with what your celeb looks like here, but don't go overboard. Look at many pictures of your celeb, you can find flaws and if you can't, I can so PM me.
limbs - good place for flaws, especially in horse back ridier. Girls get the horse rider's thighs, not so lovingly refered to as "thunder thighs" and their calves are huge! Arms, though, are often flabby because, come on, the riding itself doesn't give your arms much use so they can often be small or flabby if the character doesn't do physical labor. Stretch marks here are good as well. Remember, limbs can be covered and often are so we don't see the flaws that are there.
Boobs and Butts - simply, keep it realistic. Breasts are made out of fat, so a girl with "no fat on her body" would have "no breasts on her body" either. Besides, a skinny girl with DD breasts would look, well, odd. You know Barbie? Picture her as a real person. As for an ass, once again, no everyone has a Beyonce ass.
Flaws - first do not put "he/she thinks" by any flaws whatsoever. This means it is not a flaw, it is just them disliking their body and will not be accepted on this site. Second, flaws are a MUST, I want you actively pointing them out because most people, including myself, are not good enough writers to put them in there in small ways. If you are, great, gold star for you, can you teach me? If you need help with flaws PM me with your celeb's name. I can point out many flaws in everyone I look at and will PM you back with suggestions. Basic ones that can be used for anyone though, limbs where the upper or lower part is too long or short (my thighs are very long compared to my whole leg), short neck, over powering hair, feet too big/small, not porportionate (face or body), they are all over the place. Come up with some and put them in there. Also, avoid flaws that include scars. Everyone has scars. I want natural flaws that they had when they come out of the womb, not ones that got later that no one notices.
Everything Else - avoid terms that are opinionated. It is very easy for me, or my characters, to say that your character is not gorgeous. Try to make sure you state it's an opinion like "most guys/girls would give them a a double shot when they walk in" to say they are attractive. Avoid, completely, terms like "drop dead gorgeous" or what have you. It sets you up for a mary sue from the start, and no one wants that.

Personality - normally not something people mary sue-ize too much, but I'll give some basic hints. It's my worst catagory, easily, so I can't give you too much you progably don't already know.

Extremes - don't go too far to any extremes, no ideal rolemodels OR someone no parent would want their kid around. No one who's smart in all aspects but no one dumb as a rock. Etc.
Disorders - make sure you understand any disorder you give your character. OCD or depression needs to be researched. Something I come across a lot, girls who are scared of men. If they do not act scared of men I will shut down all threads and ask you to rewrite the app, because I get tired of this. Let me warn you now, few people can pull off a character like that.
Sluts - don't go too far with this. Give them a personality, don't just make them the town bike for no reason
Good at Everything - watch it. Jack of all trades, master of none, but we all know those people who seem to be better at us than everything. Remember, they get annoying.

History - well, what can I say, some people go overboard to try and make their character interesting, and it just makes them annoying so here are the basic tips.

Drama - avoid it. The more drama put into an app the more mary sue like the character will get. Usually just one dramatic thing is plenty, and sometimes too much as well. The characters are usually young. The best histories are usually just the basic family, someone you know. Parents divorcing is a good one as it is common and can cause something interesting in the character's personality. I hope you understand, but if not then PM me and I'l try and help more. Too much drama will result in a denied application.
Family - don't go over board, all I can really say. And keep it with the history. If your character is from a strong catholic family they will probably have a lot more siblings because their parents don't believe in birth control and all that.
Children - whether aborted or adopted or kept, it is to me used sparingly. Very sparingly. Few people go through this, and no one goes through this with no without some type of baggage behind them. So watch it, I'll deny it if too many people show up, especially very young characters.
Deaths - once again, sparingly. Don't go crazy with young deaths, and don't go crazy with totally out there ways to die either.
Pets - don't go crazy, especially with dog breeds. Stick to what everyone has. A golden, lab, pit bull. Saying someone has a well adjusted border collie is very mary sue-ish, coming from someone who owns a border collie. Also, doberman, huskies, wolf hybrids, and simply rare breeds. Avoid them

Now, I am not saying that all of this is bad. Having a few of the things I mentioned in a character or an application is all right and acceptable, and the more expirenced the writer the more likely it is that you can have more of the above in one character and keep it well adjusted. So, here's my two cents about app writing, and it's likey to be updated at an time so check back as this was made quickly and I'm sure I forgot a few things. PM me with questions.
