overall personality ,
Milo is an incredible horse. He has been well broke so his ground manners and personality are excellent. Essentially he is a giant puppy and if he could, would climb into your lap. A favorite at any barn he has been at, Milo is a very easy horse to work around. His ground manners are impeccable and because of his gentle affectionate nature, he quickly enamors all those around him. He is good for the vet, farrier, massage therapist, any barn worker, and is especially good around children. Milo is very fond of Maddie, and will come to his gate at the sound of her car or her call, will fall asleep while on the cross-ties with his head on her shoulder or in her lap, and when in the field with other horses, if they are becoming too aggressive, he will run them off so they aren’t a danger to his girl.
Milo is a very intuitive horse, and definitely knows what kind of rider he has up on his back. Maddie can throw some of her youngest students up on him, and he’ll happily plod around the ring, trot over poles and stay under that wiggly child the entire time. He also knows when a rider is more experienced, and that’s when he’ll push the boundaries, and see how well they are paying attention and how much he can get away with.
It is for this reason that he is listed for rider level as both beginner and advanced. If someone wants to really ride Milo, to actually ask of him everything he is capable of, one needs to be a very talented, very advanced rider. Even some ‘advanced’ riders simply do not have the ability to ease out the ability that he is truly capable of. He is excellent at convincing his riders that the short, jerky extended trot or that the huge, uncomfortable canter stride can’t be changed or are all he is capable of. Maddie has had quite a few trainers ride him and tell her he’s not talented, and then be stunned when she shows them what he can truly do.
While talented in both dressage and stadium, it is cross-country that Milo LOVES. He is a cross-country powerhouse. If Maddie loses points in dressage, she knows she can always make them back on the xc field. Milo will balk at almost nothing and his huge, ground-eating gallop guarantees them to be under the time almost every time. He is very clever, and almost always sees distances and will often figure out his own striding. With his friendly personality and his domination on the xc field, Maddie and Milo have gathered quite a fan-base, and are often recognized from their showing nation-wide.

history ,
Milo was born and bred in Ireland. With the incredible bloodlines he had, his stunning conformation, and excellent personality, it was obvious that Milo was going to be something great. He was originally imported to the US as an up-and-coming three-year-old. Milo was broken, saddled, and then thrown back out in the field to grow and mature for another year (as it was obvious he was going to be huge).
It was as a four-year-old that his serious training began. He was a careful mover in dressage, clever in the stadium ring and hated to bring down poles, and incredibly brave on the cross country field. It was thought that Milo was going to be an amazing competitor. He was entered into the USEA Young Event Horse as a five-year-old and left as champion, earning one of the highest conformation scores and jumping and the best dressage score for his age group. At the end of his fifth year, he was taken to two events at Novice level by a working student and had placed admirably, but not as well as one would have hoped for a potential Olympic candidate. It seemed the amazing horse of two years ago wasn’t that great.
In his sixth year, when Maddie was just 16, she came on as a working student at the farm Milo was at. She had finally recovered from her crash and the devastation of losing Finn, and had been slowly climbing back up the competition ladder and was successfully competing with her trainer’s Trakehner at Prelim. Unfortunately the horse turned up lame and Maddie was unable to bring him with her. Milo was offered for Maddie until her horse recovered, not expecting much from the combination, except that both would be in work again. Maddie and Milo instantly clicked and he flourished under her gentle but firm hand. Milo was suddenly the horse that amazed everyone once again. Together, Maddie and Milo started steadily moving up the ranks.
She ended her first season at the farm winning 2 of Novice events, placing in the top 4 in the others and winning her second Training event. At the end of that season, Maddie’s parents purchased Milo for her, and Dutton gave him away willingly- it was obvious the horse would only succeed with her. A second solid season of Training events, while schooling Prelim at home, and Milo was ready for his first Preliminary event. The leap from Training to Prelim is great- the questions are harder, the stakes higher, and where the most accidents occur. To say that Milo preformed well would be an understatement. The transition to Intermediate was not as dramatic and Milo fared exceedingly well the higher the jumps became. Maddie returned to the Young Horse Event and competed in both their first three star event (CCI***). Milo and Maddie have successfully moved to the Advanced level, and have been competing at this level nationwide since.
