basic appearance,
Hair- Maddie’s hair is a soft golden yellow with natural honey and white blonde highlights, and all absolutely natural. No bottle blonde here. Maddie’s hair would actually probably be darker if she didn’t spend as much time in the sun as she did. Her streaks naturally lighten in the sun, which is good, because she would never spend money to get them done professionally. Her hair is quite thick, falling to about mid-shoulder blade, while her bangs are swept across her forehead to curl behind her right ear. While her hair is definitely at its prettiest when let loose, if Mads is at the barn, her hair is either up in a ponytail or underneath a baseball cap or helmet. She loves it too much to cut it, but she doesn’t want her hair flying all over her face when she’s at the barn either.
Eyes- Wide and a soft grey-blue, Maddie’s eyes toe the line between quiet seriousness and mischievous playfulness. While she doesn’t wax poetic about how her eyes are like stars reflected in the ocean highlighted by the moon’s silvery rays, or other such nonsense, she does count her eyes as one of her best features. Though not quite doe-like, Maddie’s eyes are very expressive, and are the best way to guess her mood. Though her eyelashes are long and thick, she is a natural blonde, so her lashes are also blonde, and quite unnoticeable unless she has swiped some mascara on. This is the only form of make-up that she wears consistently every day.
Build- As mentioned, Maddie is a very petite person. Overall, she just has a small form with tiny ankles, thin wrists, the whole thing. What mass she does have is all muscle. She rides at least three times every day of the week, and often works out or attends pilates to strengthen muscle and keep her stamina up for those long cross country courses. While muscled, Mads is not wirey, but has fine muscles, that while not overtly obvious, make her stronger than she looks. She has a rather large vertical (surgery) scar on her left hip. When she was 15, both she and her horse crashed at large Prelim cross country jump. Mads broke her hip, two ribs, cracked 2 more, broke her collar bone, sprained her wrist, got a concussion, as well as numerous scratches and bruises from the fall. The break required several pins and a small plate to be surgically implanted to repair the hip, and despite recovering fully, cold mornings, or a long week of riding will definitely make Maddie sore
To put it bluntly, Madeleine is not a fancy dresser, but that doesn’t mean what she does wear doesn’t flatter her figure. Since she does spend almost all her time at the barn, her attire reflects that. Everyday wear is usually jeans and a tshirt, with jacket or sweater (or both, knowing Illinois winters). When she does dress up, she definitely does glam it up, often surprising people with her unexpected beauty. She’s a closeted fan of designer heels, and keeps a steady collection of Louboutins, Jimmy Choos, YSL, Prada, and more, all hidden away behind her Ariats and Danskos. Generally if she’s teaching and just riding her own horses, she’ll just wear jeans and her half-chaps and paddock boots. When riding other people’s horses, in their saddles, she’ll wear britches so as not to rub the leather. She always wears a helmet when riding and owns three- a Charles Owen skull cap, a very old velvet helmet that belonged to her mother, and a Charles Owen GR8.

overall personality ,
For how tiny Madeleine is, her personality seems to be twice as big to make up for it. She’s been described as fiery, vivacious, stubborn, intelligent, confident, and the list goes on. One of the biggest influences of her attitude is her intellect. Maddie is quick as a whip, and has a tongue to match. However, her fiery temper can sometimes get her in trouble. She’s not afraid to speak exactly what’s on her mind, though it’s often done in a sarcastic and usually funny way, she tends to rub some people the wrong way and has an equal number of friends and ‘enemies’. She rarely, if ever, gets into yelling matches, and generally just throws around sardonic quips to show her displeasure. This is also, oddly, one of the reasons she is a great instructor- if you’re doing something wrong, she won’t sugarcoat it, she’s gonna tell you, and she’s probably going to yell, but you’ll definitely improve.
For as sharp as her attitude can be, Mads is definitely not that way all the time. Most of the time, she is bright, friendly, can still be a little sarcastic, but is overall a welcoming, genuine person. She is incredibly loyal to her friends, and once you gain that loyalty, she will do anything and everything for you. As to be expected, Mads is a huge animal lover- it’s how she collected three rescue dogs and regularly adopts, retrains and sells OTTBs and works at local animal shelters in her limited free time. If you’re not kind to your animals, Maddie is not kind to you.
Maddie is one of those people that needs to be constantly busy to be happy. That’s not to say she doesn’t like her moments of relaxation, but too much free time tends to make her antsy. So she spends all day at the barn, riding, instructing, training, etc and often can be found at the bar with good friends at the day’s end. Maddie is often so busy that she doesn’t have time for relationships, but that’s just an excuse she uses to keep people at a distance. When in a relationship, Maddie would have to give all of herself, and that’s not something she takes lightly. Her current theory is that if she isn’t with anyone she won’t be hurt.

history ,
Katherine McCoy grew up in the countryside of Ireland, where her family has bred and raised champion Irish Sport Horses and Irish Draughts for over four generations. The McCoy family is well-known among the horse world, and they have breeding and training farms in New York and Florida, respectively, on top of their home farm outside of Tipperary, Ireland. Katherine, or Kat as she has been affectionately known by her family, grew up around horses, and had been riding for a long time. However, Kat was also aware that her parents wished for her to take over the family horse business, so with that in mind, she headed to NYU for college and a degree in business. It was on the streets of New York City, that Kat literally ran into Jacques Devereaux. Jacques family was originally from France, but had been living in NYC for 2 generations, spending half their time in Lyon and half in NYC. Jacques’ family comes from old money, and the only experience he had with horses was either betting on them at Saratoga or watching them in a polo field in the Hamptons. To say that Jacques and Kate did not initially get along would be a dramatic understatement. Their relationship eventually went from love/hate to simply love and they were wed.
It would be two years later that they would welcome Madeleine Eleanor into their lives. From an early age it would be obvious that Madeleine had developed her mother’s strong love of animals and especially horses. Kat rode through the beginning of her pregnancy and Maddie jokes that she was born in the saddle while her mother was jumping, though she was actually born at Mount Sinai. Maddie started riding when she was 3, got her first pony at 4 1/2 and was competing soon there after. Maddie started in little hunter shows, because, despite her horsey mom, she was her parent’s only child and they were worried for her safety. Kat at the time, continued to event at the Prelim and Intermediate level, often bringing up young horses through the levels. By the time Maddie was 7, simple short stirrup classes were just too boring and she was getting frustrated with the A level shows. She quite simply told her mother and father that she would be eventing from now on. And she did just that from that point on, steadily climbing the ranks and gaining acclaim. However, tragedy struck when Maddie was 15. Madeleine and her horse, Finn, were coming up to an enormous Prelim complex. It had been downpouring all day, and was still raining while Maddie did the course. It was at this complex, a skinny brush to a solid log wood combo, that Finn took the first jump, lost his footing, and slid towards the log. Now if he had tried to jump it, both he and Maddie would have flipped and crashed. Instead, he turned and slammed into the jump, taking most of the impact and then sliding up and over the jump to land on the other side. Neither Madeleine or Finn stood up. Maddie was medevac’d out, where the only question she asked was what happened to Finn, before she passed out. He was later humanely euthanized at the vet clinic, after it was found that his injuries were simply too serious. Madeleine wouldn’t compete for over a year. She was later coaxed back into riding when she met Milo while she was a working student with Philip Dutton. Milo reignited her love of the sport and she went back to it with vigor.
When it became clear that Maddie would be showing and eventing up and down the east coast almost exclusively, she attended school during only part of the year and did the rest of her work through online programs and with tutors. That’s not to say her studies suffered, but her social life certainly did. While she had numerous friends through her barn and at the shows, she didn’t go to her prom or attend a football game and didn’t have a first date until college. She’ll say this didn’t bother her, but it’s a bit of a sore subject, especially when she is amongst a group that is exchanging high school stories, and she has nothing to add.
Having been an ardent lover of animals all her life, Maddie went to college for Pre-Veterinary studies at Cornell in upstate NY. At this time she continued to ride competitively, though with a significantly shorter show schedule. At this time she started teaching at the barn where she boarded Milo. This was also where she encountered Friday. Friday was the horse at the barn that no one wanted to deal with, had gone out of control, was nastier than a junkyard dog, and had gone unridden so long that he was basically unbroken. Madeleine fell in love with him almost instantly. Milo also happened to be the only horse that would tolerate him in turn-out. Friday’s owners were only too willing to get rid of him and Maddie took both of them when she was accepted into veterinary school back at Cornell. Things were going fine, thought Maddie’s schedule was incredibly hectic with classes, studying and riding. It was Maddie’s second year at school that she received word that her father had been diagnosed with cancer. Maddie immediately dropped out and went home to be with her family. Her father eventually recovered, but at that point, Maddie wasn’t in the frame of mind to go back to school. She had heard of Caramel Rivers out in Illinois, and took a trip to check it out. Maddie loved the farm and the area, and brought her small troupe of animals along with her and has been riding and training at Caramel Rivers ever since.

roleplay sample ,
Stifling a yawn behind a fist, Maddie turned the wheel of her Volvo XC-90 to pull down the driveway to the barn. The sun had risen over the horizon only an hour ago, and Maddie was more than ready to start her day at her favorite place- the barn. She eased into a parking spot, turned the key and killed the engine. Grabbing her coffee, Maddie jumped from the car, and with the practiced ease of someone who had done this every morning for who knows how long, managed to juggle keys, coffee, bag, and open the back door to let out her three dogs.
“Alright, let’s go,” she said smilingly to them as she bumped the door shut with her hip, and made her way through the large open doors into the main aisle. The dogs, an enormous Great Pyrenees mix, a regal German Shepherd, and a petite Corgi all followed at her heels. She called out greetings and hellos to the morning crew and the few early-risers who had also made it to the barn at such an hour and continued on to the heated tack room. Madeleine opened the door and gave a shiver of delight as the warmth of the room seeped back into her back bones. Charlie, her big Pyrenees mix, promptly laid down by the heater and almost instantly fell asleep. Going about her normal morning schedule, Maddie began filling her pockets with treats and taking the last swig of her coffee, put it into the sink to be rinsed out later.
She left the warmth of the tack room, and headed out the doors in the direction of the paddocks, her boots crunching against the gravel Maddie had always been a firm believer in keeping horses outside in turnout for as long as possible, and only bringing them in to feed or on very rainy/snowy/cold days. Both Friday and Milo were kept out at least 12 hours or more, and both were calmer, happier horses for it. Arriving at the large paddock, Madeleine was happy to see her boys already making their way over to her, however slowly. Well if she waited for them, it would take forever, as Milo was stopping every couple of steps to grab another mouthful of grass. Pulling a peppermint from her pocket, she unwrapped it, and began to crinkle the wrapper it in her hands,
“Come on boys! Come and get it!” she called out to the pair of horses, almost comical in their extreme difference in heights.
Friday, the dramatically shorter of the two, stopped dead in his tracks, and his head shot up, ears pricked forward at the sound of the crackling material. Suddenly he burst into a flat out gallop, always led by his stomach, and clearly enticed by the treats Maddie was holding. Milo followed, though at a more sedate and reserved lope, though his huge, ground-eating stride had him catching up within moments.
“Alright, alright you two,” she exclaimed while deftly doling out treats and slipping leather halters over their heads. Once everyone was happily crunching away and safely haltered and clipped to their lead, Madeleine Devereaux led her favorite horses, Milo plodding on her left, and Friday prancing at her right, up to the barn to begin another busy day at Caramel Rivers.
