I got these from the actually breed sites, so yes, they are actual rules. Not trying to make your life hell =]
Hanoverian “The foal's name must begin with the first letter of the sire’s registered name. The only exception to this rule of registration involves the W line. Offspring of certain W-line stallions whose pedigrees contain Feiner Kerl and Ferdinand must be named beginning with the letter F. AHS stallions whose foals are affected by this ruling include Walldorf, Walter Scott, Wishing Well, Wodan and Wümmestern.”
Oldenburg “If the foal is a filly that is intended for breeding the name must start with the first letter of the Dam's name. If the filly is not intended for breeding then the name can start either with the first letter of the Dam's name or with the first letter of the Sire's name, but cannot start with any other letter. If the foal is a colt the name must start with the first letter of the Sire's name.”
Holsteiner “No horse may be registered under a name which is a duplicate name of a horse, alive or dead, which has already been registered in the books of the AHHA. Full male siblings, however, may use duplicate names with the appropriate ordinal (e.g., Calypso I, Calypso II, etc.). Male offspring must be named such that the first letter of the name is the same as the first letter of the sire’s name. Names will be limited to no more than eighteen letters, including spaces. Use of the sire’s name as part of the foal’s registered name is discouraged.” When it comes to fillies, I’m not gonna be picky because it’s something about naming the mare with the letter assigned to the year in which she was born, which is a pain to find out, so no worries there.
Trakehner “Purebred Trakehner names must start with the first letter of the Dam's name. Names are limited to 25 characters, including spaces. Names ending in numbers, such as One Six are not permitted. Punctuation marks and Roman Numerals are not permitted”
Westphalian “Foals must be named with the first letter of their sire’s name.”
Thoroughbred “No initials such as C.O.D., F.O.B., etc. No names ending in "filly," "colt," "stud," "mare," "stallion," or any similar horse-related term. No names consisting entirely of numbers, except numbers above thirty may be used if they are spelled out. No names ending with a numerical designation such as "2nd" or "3rd," whether or not such a designation is spelled out. No names of persons unless written permission to use their name is on file with The Jockey Club. No names of race tracks or graded stakes races. No names clearly having commercial significance, such as trade names. No names that are suggestive or have a vulgar or obscene meaning; names considered in poor taste; or names that may be offensive to religious, political or ethnic groups. No names from the restricted list (Hall of Fame members, Eclipse Awards winners, Kentucky Derby winners, etc.”
